Remote simultaneous interpretation was already gaining momentum before the COVID-19 pandemic, and has now become a part of our lives thanks to the conveniences of digitization. Although it is carried out mostly on Zoom as the platform offers an additional interpretation feature, platforms such as Teams, Webex and Google Meets allow for remote simultaneous interpretation as well.&nbsp;
On these platforms, the interpreter translates the message that s/he hears through earphones and speaks it into a microphone in the target language while the speaker speaks. Audio of interpreters and speakers is provided in two different channels, allowing the audience to follow the meeting in the desired language. The only difference with this type of interpretation is that it eliminates the need for interpreter booths and simultaneous interpretation equipment, allowing the interpreter to translate remotely with the help of a headset microphone.
However, there are many rules that must be followed in remote simultaneous interpretation in order to avoid technical problems, maintain the flow of the meeting, and ensure quality performance. For instance, interpreters must connect to broadband via an Ethernet cable, work with a generator system in case of power outage, and translate with a microphone that is suitable for remote simultaneous interpretation and connected to a USB port. As the connection and sound quality of the speaker are the most important factors for the accuracy of remote simultaneous interpretation, organizers and speakers must make sure that all speakers use headsets instead of speaking directly to the computer.
Another crucial factor is the number of interpreters who will be carrying out remote simultaneous interpretation at the meeting. As translations with simultaneous interpretation equipment are made over digital audio with a computer instead of analog audio, which doubles the cognitive load for interpreters, there must be at least two interpreters present in meetings of 0-4 hours and at least three interpreters present in meetings of 4-6 hours, while meetings that will last longer must have teams working in rotations in case of any technical problems.
